How to Wash Your Oriental Rug.

Vacuum the back of the rug first and then vacuum the front.
Take outside to a (clean) flat area, preferably only slightly graded so the water will drain off.
Test the dyes before starting with a clean, white, wet (cold water) wash cloth and rub different colors to ensure they are all fast. If not, spray down the whole rug completely with mixture of 1 part white vinegar/ 3 parts cold water. Let the vinegar/water mixture settle in for a minute, before you start.

The first step is to saturate the rug with water, using the hose, front and back. Below is a really cool video and only shows the washing briefly but you'll get an idea.
Take 1/4th to 1/2 cup (for a very large rug) Ecover (for fine washables) or another good one is Orvis horse shapoo and mix into about a quart of water, then distribute all over the rug. If you have a brush with a long handle, gently brush the rug, going the way of the pile. You can watch here:

The above video is also on links page under Zollanvari. The rug-wash part is pretty quick but you can get the idea...also, shows the weavers spinning the wool by hand, and a Qashqai weaver making a rug!

If you don't have a brush, use the hose to foam up the detergent and loosen the dirt from the rug...let it sit for a minute and then start rinsing with a jet stream from the hose. You must rinse the rug thouroughly for at least 7 or 8 minutes and then rinse the back of the rug. Again, rinse the front, total time, 10-12 minutes, rinsing, ensuring that NO bubbles are appearing on the face or back of the rug before you end off. Flip the rug over and rinse the back..no need to soap up the back. Then, turn it back over, right side up and rinse again. When almost done, mix another white vinegar solution, 5 parts water, 1 part white vinegar and then rinse a bit more after that.

If the rug is too heavy to pick up, roll it up and lean it on it's side against a wall and let the water drain out for a while (half hour), then drape it over a balcony or on a deck in the hot sun where air can get in underneath the rug. Ensure the rug dries in a couple of days and if needed, put it inside near a heater to dry completely. Then brush the rug in the direction of the pile.
Should look great.

I can't guarantee your rug will not run, color-wise but this procedure has worked well for me and I have washed well over 30 pieces. The strong white vinegar solution at the start helps to set fugitive dyes and at the end to remove any soap residue and set the proper PH and helps your wool look lusterous and beautiful. Also, you can use Orvis horse shampoo but I like Ecover for fine washables better.

I relieved a nice testimonial recently from a client I started working with over 2 years ago. It is being put on my testimonial page as I type. Here are a few of the rugs they have purchased from my gallery in their new home.

As you can see, they have successfully combined numerous tribal rugs with their extensive collection of antiques and traditional furnishings, while keeping the space open and light and still being able to enjoy the gorgeous tile and hardwood floors throughout the house. The last few photos are a peek at the wonderful grounds which are as enchanting as this castle like home which they built from the ground up!

This first photo is of an upstairs study. The larger rug under the sofa and desk is a finely woven Persian Tabriz, the smaller piece a new vegetable dyed tribal rug with a classic pendant medallion design. To see all the details described in each photo below, click to enlarge!

The stripped rug you see below greets you at the first floor entryway. This design was taken from the style of old Turkish Shawls. The trade name for this is Shaal, woven in Afghanistan. My wholesaler is currently sold out of these so this piece was the only one of this type I ever had at my shop to offer for sale. Gorgeous harmonious colors, great design and sturdy to boot!

This is the upstairs master bathroom. Note the view! The small rug here is a Turkoman rug, woven in Afghanistan, approximately 3 x 6.

Below is a Yomut Turkoman rug in front of this bedroom fireplace.

The gallery size runner below is a semi-antique from North west Iran. The actual design is called the Memlin Gul as the 15th Century artist, Hans Memling painted rugs with this design element frequently. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Memling

In Honor of my Boy Dante January 10, 2008 – September 29, 2011

My Beautiful Boy Dante has left my side.

I weep in pain, no regrets in hide

So attentive and loving was he who has passed

In his honor I now share a deep love that lasts

So smart when young, I could not believe.

So beautiful and playful, almost hard to conceive.

I dreamt of this dog by my side for all years

But fate cut this short with realized fears

An illness that came with the flash of a knife

My dog now in pain, such a terrible plight.

So many vets we did endure with too many medicines, no meaningful cure

For weeks distraught to see my boy ill, I continued to reach for the magical pill.

We traveled so far to the specialists known

I closed my shop to stay with him at home.

Yesterday morning I knew it was time

To end his suffering and now embrace mine.

With arms held tight and kisses of love

I released my boy Dante to the sky’s above

I believe in nature and the circle of life

So I’m looking to learn what I might from this plight.

Below are a series of videos form 2009, which I found fascinating. A 60 day journey that gave me a new appreciation for all that one can take for granted on a daily basis, with life here in the states.
I have always had a deep respect for the weavers that make the rugs that I sell in my retail gallery but watching this series only added to my understanding and admiration.

I found this series on You Tube. It shows in detail, the Bakhtiari migration, which has gone on for some 2500 years. You will see the amazing strength of character, physical and mental capabilities and total commitment to purpose in a people that never question the hardships they endure to find grazing pasture for their animals. The Bakhtiari are respected weavers and have woven beautiful rugs for centuries. I hope you enjoy!

My gallery will be closed Sunday, Monday of this week (May 29th, 30th).

These last few months business has been going well. Local and out of town buyers have picked up so take this as a good sign that the economy is coming to life.

The good, the bad and the ugly, but not too much ugly! Wholesale prices of well made, top of the line, vegetable dyed, Persian tribal rugs have gone up. The good news is if you have one, it is now worth more than you purchased it for!

As of Sept. 29, 2010, an Iranian Embargo went into effect, emanating from the US government; specifically, President Obama. This included Persian rugs. The few months prior to this, every wholesaler in the US that was in the business of bringing in Persian rugs, moved the earth and the sun to import as many beautiful rugs as they possibly could. Now, supplies are limited to only those with cash and a customer base to keep all flowing. HINT: The currently available rugs will not last forever! As I have mentioned in a few earlier posts, I still have a good supply of vegetable dyed, one of a kind, Persian tribal rugs in my inventory; Qashqai, Bijar, Khamseh. http:///

I am continuing to invest in what I can until supplies run out. The last embargo lasted over 10 years in duration and when I started my business in 1998, it was illegal to import Persian rugs. This changed in 2000 when President Clinton opened the door to importation of Iranian goods and Persian rugs flowed like a raging river back into the US.

Here are a few Facts about Persian rugs:
1) Persian rugs have the highest resale value of any handwoven rugs in the world.
2) Most other countries; Pakistan, India, China, Romania, and I hate to say this as I love Afghan rugs, but even Afghanistan, copy Persian rug designs.
4) Good quality Persian wool compares to nothing, period. Stain resistant, hard wearing, and when hand spun with the longer, finer fibers, glistens like the sun!
5) There are many different types of Persian rugs from the most detailed city workshop pieces such as a Tabriz or Isfahan to the bold geometric tribal designs that are woven in remote villages in Iran.
6) If properly cared for a hand woven rug can last over 300 years. There are numerous museum pieces that exceed this age from Middle Eastern Mosques or estates in Europe but if you take care of your rug it will take care of you!

Am I Persian? No, I was born in San Francisco and have blue eyes and blond hair, but the rug bug bit me and I cannot escape, nor do I want to.

Persian Bijar, Garros design.

This rug is new and was woven in Iran. Woven by Kurdish weavers near Bijar in the town of Garros. Old design, new rug. Woven with plant based dyes, hand spun wool with much care, the few Bijars that I have left really speak almost the same language as the antique rugs of this type.

This piece recently sold but I found out early this week that my wholesaler in New York has about 4 additional rugs of a very similar type, in the 5 x 7, 5 x 8 range, that are available. They are all similar in design, but each piece has slight differences, if you look carefully. All are navy ground and have accent colors close to the piece above. I immediately ordered one for my personal collection, but there are still 3 gorgeous pieces available. As there is now a Persian rug embargo in place as of September 29, 2010, there will not be more of these coming into the US in the foreseeable future. The only Persian rugs that are available to dealers, such as myself are pieces that are already in the country.

Gabbeh Rugs at my Sebastopol, CA gallery!

I did a quick video yesterday of some of the Gabbeh rugs at my gallery for those that have some interest in this type of rug. Hopefully the current Persian rug embargo will not last forever as the original and best Gabbehs always come from Iran. I am currently open to consignment sales of good quality hand woven Oriental rugs or runners, preferabley tribal in nature. Antique or new, but must be in good condition and clean. Persian tribal rugs are my first choice, but will consider any rug, if it has the magic! Small to large, OK.

What Makes an Oriental Rug Valuable?

Here are some of the factors that I consider determine the value of a good quality hand woven rug or Oriental Rug.

1) Beautiful colors. Are you enchanted? Are the colors working harmoniously together?

2) Design details. Do you like the details of the design? I have seen a gorgeous rug with possibly one aspect of the design that did not sit right with me. The layout of the design is called the "drawing" in the trade. If the colors are beautiful and the drawing of the rug is artistically pleasing, you are off to a very good start.

3) Quality of the materials used. Most Oriental rugs are woven with wool, silk or cotton. Is the wool spun by hand or machine spun? Machine spun wool, even on a hand woven rug, costs less than hand spun wool. Additionally, there are different qualities of wool. The finer the wool, the more it costs. See my article, “How to Buy an Oriental Rug”.

Sometimes cotton is used in the foundation, such as the warps and wefts. On very fine silk rugs, usually the better pieces have silk foundations so then you have a piece that is 100% silk. This rug will cost more than a silk rug woven on cotton warps. Silk threads are finer and thus one can tie tighter knots. More work, more labor, better skill, higher price.

4) Quality of the dyes used and the skill with which they are applied. Vegetable dyes, sometimes called natural dyes, are costlier to produce and take experience and skill to apply. In the history of weaving, the master dyer was one of the most respected members of the tribal community. Additionally, he never revealed his secret formulas for creating the beautiful colors that made Oriental Rugs and Persian Rugs so famous throughout the world.

5) Skill of the weaving. Is the weaving even? How can you tell this? Flip over the corner of the rug and inspect the back. Are the lines and knots mostly even or zig zagging every which way?

6) Popularity and demand for a particular type of rug in the market place always affects price.

7) Availability. This is another important factor as if the type of rug is too scarce and highly sought after, such as certain antique rugs, prices can reach the stratosphere.

8) An additional consideration would be the cost of fuel as this can affect shipping prices.
Value of the American dollar in international markets also affect price here in the US.

9) For antique rugs: Condition, beauty, true verifiable age, rarity and market conditions all affect the value. How well it is marketed and the reputation of the seller, or auction house can also influence the price.

In consideration of the current business climate, I am thrilled that in the last few months I have sold quite a few rugs.

As of yesterday, I just spent my last dime (a bit of hyperbole here) to get more Persian rugs into my gallery, before the new Persian rug embargo really hits, one and all. Yesterday was the last day for the wholesalers to get their rugs off the docks. It is over now...so here we go.

Yes, I am currently taking good quality Persian rugs, into my gallery on consignment, but I am fussy, so if you have something, please send me detailed photos, including the back of the rug, the size, age, condition, and any info you have on the piece and your expected price. I am particularly interested in antique rugs from Iran, and antique Oriental Rug trappings such as camel bags, saddlebags, or any such items, nomadic tribal weavers would create! I always answer emails and actually wrote an article on my web site, for those that are interested in selling their rug themselves, entitled, "How to Sell Your Oriental or Persian Rug". Dear Sirs,

I am highly distressed by the pending Iranian Embargo moving forward this month on the importation of any products, which will include hand woven Persian Rugs.
I am a small business owner and depend heavily on these very special Persian rugs for my gallery. I also sell rugs woven in other areas of the world but the Persian rugs, literally have kept me in business these past few years as their quality and construction are above and beyond any other types I am offering.

My business, Paradise Oriental Rugs, Inc., located in the San Francisco Bay Area at 137 North Main St., Sebastopol, CA, has been purchasing rugs from EMOC Oriental Rug, Inc., located in New York, for over 10 years. These rugs are woven in villages in Southern Iran and near the Bijar area by expert weavers in their homes and are paid a fair wage.

With the loss of this product, it is almost assured, my retail gallery will loose a tremendous advantage and a good deal of income.

I urge you to rethink this embargo as it will have a very negative effect of American rug dealers, such as myself, with retail galleries offering these beautiful Persian rugs to their clients and customers.

2010 Persian Rug Embargo, a Dealer's Nightmare!

The last day to bring in Persian rugs, according to what I have read on these new Iranian sanctions, is September 28, 2010.

Considering at least 40% of the rugs I sell are from Iran, I am highly distressed by this upcoming embargo.

Yes, there are other rugs, but the new, vegetable dyed tribal rugs from Iran (Persian Gabbeh's, Qashqai, Khamseh and Bijar rugs) are what I would consider the top rugs offered at my gallery.

I actually thought to myself...maybe it's time to leave the US.

At this time, I still have a nice selection of Persian rugs but as far as what will be available in the future, your retail choices of Iranian rugs will markedly decrease, after September 29, 2010 from US retailers.

If there every was a reason to buy it now, this is it, for sure!
I am very sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the good news is, to those that have purchased the better quality Persian rugs, my guess is that your rugs will be going up in value!

My beautiful German Shepherd, Dante!

Hello!

If you're here in California, hope you enjoyed the hot weather today. Gorgeous day and with the heat, thought it might be a bit slow at the shop...which it was. A few visitors but not busy, as expected. Brought my dog, Dante down to work and he did well. Particularly enjoyed the air conditioning and we had some fun taking pictures.
Just for anyone out there that is concerned, my dog is very clean, no fleas and all rugs were vacuumed properly after the photo shoot.

If you love German Shepherds and also pretty Oriental rugs, this is a true test of the durability of the rugs I sell, as all are new, and still in perfect condition. His reward for posing perfectly for our "photo op" was a little go round with the ball. Since at least 90%of the clients that buy rugs from me have pets, just thought some of you might enjoy these photos. My boy Dante, is housebroken withing an inch of his life and loves people, so he did enjoy his little visit to the shop today!

My dog is what is called a "sable" German Shepherd. His mom was born in the Chez Republic and his dad had a similar heritage. He is a purebred German Shepherd Dog, bred for three traits. Loyalty, tracking and protection. He is very, very smart, incredibly attentive and loyal and has a prey drive to end all. In German Shepherd lingo, that means if it moves he will chase it. This is quite an asset when training this type of dog as it is a truly motivating force. He is a superb ball player and quite the jumper, although he always has the corner of his eye on me! Obviously, I think very highly of my companion dog, but just thought I'd share. He is 2 years and 4 months old, weighs just under 80 lbs and has many doggy friends at the dog park here in Sebastopol.

Back to the rug universe...my recent sale is now over but still have some rugs I am making deals on, particularly the rugs from Turkey. They are on my site so take a look, if a Turkish rug calls out to you give me a call. Questions are always welcome and hope you enjoy these photos.

Although, this is a little blurry, it is my favorite!

It's been almost 5 years now since I put up the first page of my web site and as anyone knows that has a site, it is always a work in progress. I spent the good part of a year reading everything I could find on search engine optimization (known as SEO) which deals mostly with how to get the search engines to recognize one's site and bring it up when someone is looking for information or products similar to what is being offered. Google is the king of the mountain with Yahoo trailing closely behind.

When I started selling rugs a number of years back, I truly never thought anyone would by a rug online. At that time, I didn't have a computer, nor a clue of how things would change.

In the last couple of months, here are a few of the locations where rugs from my shop have found new homes! Apparently, with these buyers there was either no local rugs store or the shops in their area did not have the types of rugs they were looking for. Alaska, Iowa, Tallahassee, Seattle, NYC and yesterday, Boston. I will say, this really helps so I will continue to make improvements to my site, when time permits.

I really enjoy the communication and meeting different people, even if only in phone conversations and it's always facinating to me, how each individual is attracted to different colors and designs.

I still have many rugs that are looking for homes, so don't hesitate to give me a call with your questions!

New Jeweler in Sebastopol! My new neighbor!

Well, well...what's happening in Sebastopol?

It was a sad story...when I first moved in to my Sebastopol location, almost 4 years ago. On day three, I realized that my neighbor, the local jeweler, was not the nicest person to have as a neighbor. Within a period of two weeks, I asked this individual to please, never speak to me again. Being a friendly person, this was highly unusual but required for my sanity.

Three years passed and I had no further problems with this socially challenged, negative person. Six months ago I got the good news from my landlord that my neighbor's lease would be expiring at some point in the not to distant future. I looked forward to this time.

Fast forward to November, 2009. He left and the new tenant, also a jeweler, arrived to take possession of the location and start his renovations. His former location was in the town of Guerneville and I had actually heard about this jeweler a few times. Word on the street was that he did beautiful work and was a sweet person. A winning combination in my book!

Well, we met...and it was a great day! What a lovely guy and he was renovating the space from the ground up. It took a while but the outcome was worth it. Gorgeous storefront filled with unique and aesthetically dynamic pieces!

Keeping it interesting over here. Love getting new rugs in, particularly when they are this inspirational.

This runner is one of my favorites. I believe it's about 12 feet long and the wool is as luscious as the design layout and the colors. In the window of my shop as I type!

Also, this beauty. Simple, very finely woven Gabbeh in a wonderful, almost teal green with blue undertones. Not easy photographing simple designs but did my best. Green rugs are often unavailable, as the wool is first dyed yellow and then over-dyed with blue. It is not always a successful process, but when it's right, it's magical. Always pushing my many resources for green rugs, simple or tribal and when I am fortunate enough to acquire a few choice pieces, they are usually, very well received. Enjoy.

Last but not least, have a look at this rug. I was mesmerized. I will let the rug speak for itself. Size is 4 x 10. A long wide runner. In the trade, this size is referred to as a gallery size carpet.

Just received this photo in an email and the lovely runner I sold is smiling happily in it's new home.

The clients came with measurements and a concept and we looked at many runners and they finally settled on this piece. Was so pleased to get the photo as their home is very well done!

The darling "husband" called me today and said, "We don't like the runner!", "We Love it!"

Perfect!
My shop is in Sonoma County and these were local people. I'm always pleased when I have the right rug for the needs and wants of my potential clients.

When I started in this business there was an embargo on Persian rugs and what was available to sell as a merchant, was much more limited than what is now available. The wonderful, colorful Gabbehs are just one of the numerous rug types that were no where to be found here in the US a decade ago.

With the renaissance in the use of vegetable dyes and the resurgence of creativity in designs such as antique and modern, I personally think that the choices available to anyone seeking a rug to own are better than they have ever been.

There are Persian Gabbehs, Indo-Gabbeh and tufted Gabbehs (which are not Gabbehs at all!) Tufted rugs are not hand woven, if there is any question about that but actually held together with glue. A different animal for sure and never to be put in the same category as a hand knotted or handmade Oriental rug.

New Rugs in today and more on the way!

These rugs arrived yesterday! Not sure which one is more beautiful. The first rug is a finely woven piece from Yayla. Size is 4'10" x 6'7. Design is Sultanabad. The blue-green in this rug, really adds a special depth. The colors in the tulip border are deeply saturated. There is an unusual burgundy accent color, throughout rug that works surprisingly well! I found it hard to stop looking at this one which is always a good sign.

The large navy Herez, above, looks even more beautiful in person.

This last one is very interesting as it was woven in Afghanistan but really has some of the qualities that until now, I have only seen in the best Persian Gabbehs! It is tightly woven, has a heavy body, the colors are perfectly chosen and the rug sparkles! The name of this is Aryana Shaal. It measures 6'4" x 6'6". The wool on this rug is of excellent quality and spun by hand.

Had a gal in my shop on the weekend and her daughter was dressed in holiday cheer.
She snuggled up and created a little play house with a few small rugs and I just had to capture it with my camera.

This beautiful piece just came in.
This is a 10 x 14 rug from Afghanistan. The design is Turkish, taken from an old Ushak. Colors are a bit lighter in person. Rug is in gallery one, on my site. Gorgeous rug!

Many new rugs in this week!

Hard to leave the store but I did it and have returned with many new and interesting hand woven pieces.
Of potential interest to the tribal rug guys...Quchan Kilims, mostly mid 20th Century, each of which I found unique and beautiful. Quchan, is in NE Iran, close to Turkmenistan and the these kilims are woven by Kurdish weavers. They are colorful and each piece is a bit different. Quite durable also. The work and artistry in these flatweaves comes out loud and clear with up to three different weaving techniques employed in each piece! Sizes are very tribal; 5 x 10, 6 x 11, but for those that love flatweaves and kilims, worth taking a look at. Mixed into all the galleries.

Also in recently are some very fine quality (tightly woven) antique design rugs from Ariana Rugs, Inc. in unusual European and old Agra (India) designs. These are high end pieces and truly look like antique rugs!

Additionally, many new runners, up to 15 feet with varied looks and styles.
Many smaller rugs in also, some of which will be quite affordable but too many to photo and get up on the site in one day. I will be adding these to my site as quickly as I can. As I add rugs to each gallery, the new rugs, will always be at the bottom of the gallery.

New rug that is pretty amazing....

This rug has now found a home!

Just thought I would give this piece a little attention. Arrived two days ago and the more I look at it, the more I see. This is a Persian Luri recently woven in Southern Iran. The wool on this rug feels like silk and of course, 100% vegetable dyes. Have a look!

My new favorite rug! World class Persian Bijar!

Have a look at this beauty. This is a 6 x 8.3 Persian Bijar. Woven in Iran by Kurdish weavers with excellent wool dyed and vegetable (plant based) dyes.

It just came in yesterday and when I opened it, I was truly mesmerized. It's obvious that I'm in love with the rugs I sell but this Bijar has the true magic. The colors are so harmonious and the weaving so impeccable that I would say with confidence that this is one of the best rugs I have ever seen.

The drawing (this is the design outline) is calming yet interesting and although
the basic layout is a geometric rendition of the pendant medallion design, little flowers are subtly worked into the background and secretly appear as you continue to study the piece. The yellow at the edge of the field (area inside the border) is just amazing. Not too bright, not too muddy, not too soft...just exactly right. In the detailed border design, the light blue accents give just the right touch of a sparkle. And then there is the deep green in tiny increments throughout the piece.
I believe this rug is spectacular. Look it over carefully and each time, you will notice something else, you missed at first glance. A perfect rug continues to fascinate, endlessly.

Sunday morning Farmers Market in Sebastopol. Belly Dancers and More!

The dancers were back and this time, I had my camera! Above are a few photos of the belly dancers at the Sunday morning Farmers' Market, in Sebastopol, California, taken June 28,2009. The wonderful dancers are the Raks Rosa Dance Company. The director is Elana Quihuis. For those of you interested, their web site is http://www.raksrosa.com/.

The weather was HOT but there was ample shade and the mood was relaxed and friendly. Many vendors with fresh, organic produce and an assortment of exquisite hand-crafted items and delectable food. The entertainment was great. This market runs all summer so come and check it out on any Sunday morning. The market is held right in the center of downtown Sebastopol in the park and runs from 9:00 AM to 2 or 3PM.

My Favorite Rugs! Paradise Oriental Rugs

Anyone care to see my current favorite rugs? They are right above...just love these. I believe the Khamsehbaf and Qashqai rugs that I am in the fortunate position to have at my gallery will be the antiques of the future. They are woven with great care, excellent wool, the best dyes and are incredibly hearty. A number of the designs, such as the above pieces are gorgeous. If you haven't seen any of these, take a look. I feel these are my best rugs and over the long term, will be good investments.

Questions About Rugs and My Best Advise!

I recieve many emails from people far and near and so I've decided to post the questions and my responses so that the information is available to one and all. Here's the most recent:

"I saw your web site and you seem to be knowledgeable about rugs. This is my carpet. I've been told by my rug cleaner, one of the few guys who still cleans by hand in Los Angeles, that this rug is over 75 years old, Belgian, and probably machine made. I really like the rug, but as you can see, the wear is getting bad. Is a rug like this worth restoring? Can a rug like this be restored? I love the aged look of it, but I think it's a little TOO aged. One of his guys offered to "color" the bald spots. If the rug isn't worth that much, is that a way to go - or will it look painted? Any advice you could give would be most appreciated."

Dear Melanie,

There is really no investment potential in older machine made rugs. If they are in perfect condition, there is some value there, but never as much as a good hand-woven rug.

Babylon rug cleaners on Westerm in Los Angeles is the best one that I know of. Link below.

If they can put a bit of the color back where it's worn out, it may look better for a while but don't spend a lot of money on that. These guys are the best in LA and VERY fairly priced.
If it's clean now, my best recommendation is just to arrange your furniture so the worn spots don't show and use it until you are done.

Machine woven rugs cannot be restored. You are right, it is a very pretty rug.

Being the first civilian that entered Iraq after the start of the war, his mission was simple. Rescue the animals in the Baghdad Zoo. With little resources and sheer guts he was overwhelmed when he arrived to discover only 35 starving, dehydrated animals left on the brink of death from a former population of 600. No water, filthy cages, broken pipes destroyed by bombs...the question was where to start. This is an amazing story of hope and inspiration that shows what ONE individual can do to make a difference.

Here's a hint. Not one animal died after his arrival. This book is a must read.

Amazing Camel in Downtown Sebastopol on Thursday in front of Paradise Oriental Rugs!

I arrived to work yesterday and there was a large trailer parked in front of my rug store. I didn't think twice about it until someone asked me, "Is that your camel?"

I was busy on the phone and getting set up to open when it was pointed out to me by one of my neighbors on Main Street, that there was a real, live camel, parked in a trailer, directly in front of my rug gallery.

I waited patiently until the caretakers of Kazzy returned as I had no idea if she was friendly or even how to approach her. She appeared to be completely relaxed with cars going by and one and all, magically pulling out their digital cameras, including me! When her owners returned, I was amazed to find out she was a therapy animal from Lyon Ranch in Sonoma County and was in between visits to convalescent hospitals while her owners were out to lunch.

When they returned, I was offered the opportunity to meet her along with everyone else! She was so sweet and affectionate, it was fantastic! I asked many questions and found out Kazzy is one smart camel. She is trained and works as a therapy animal bringing smiles to the faces of all she meets. She's particularly fond of men with beards, I was told by her owners, but friendly to all and truly enjoys her work as a therapy animal.

Decorating with Antique Oriental Rugs

I do believe this is a beautifully created space and recently received this photo in an email from one of my loyal clients. The three rugs you see here were purchased at my gallery a little less than a month ago, so I was thrilled to see all.

The small piece you see hanging on the wall in the back of the photo is the front of an old Persian saddlebag. These are known as bagfaces in the trade. The piece is an old Persian Qashqai and I think her placement on the wall is excellent.

The faux finish wall with the blue hues bring this whole dinning area together and speaks to me of Greece or Italy, reminiscent of days gone by. I think it's just stunning with the old rugs. Another facet of this space is that it remains interesting as one continues to look over all. She has kept the space open, allowing the wood floors to add an elegance while still retaining a very individual quality with her signature look.

The rug you see under the dining table is an old Kurdish rug with deeply saturated colors woven is a bold tribal design with a whimsical quality. This piece was quite dynamic in it's large scale geometric drawing and smartly, she has given it breathing space. The last rug I will comment on, placed right at the entrance to the dining area is an old Ersari Turkoman. It was slightly faded but still smiling. This little charmer was one of my favorites as the wool had a beautiful sheen (antique patina) and the rug was quite charismatic. Notice that each piece is a different size but the overall look of the room is balanced.

Just thought I would share, as this space was created with three antique rugs, all of which were somewhat different from one another. What she has achieved here is harmonious and contemporary, while still retaining an old world charm.

Why I love Sebastopol.

On Sunday, my gallery opens at noon. As usual, I was running a few minutes late and was slightly distressed about this and my lack of a parking spot close to the front of my store. I decided to park my car down by the theaters in town as there is a huge lot there and always space. Luckily for me, when I walked through the Plaza on the way to my shop, there was a troop of belly dancers dancing to fantastic Arabic music.

I stopped in my tracks and watched. It was awesome! There were six dancers and I surmised that a few were students of the one dancer that stood out light a gleaming blue white diamond. Her manner was so confident. Her moves impeccable and timing perfect. I truly learned a lot about performance just watching her. She was not emanating, "I'm in love with myself" but more of a warm, loving, "I am here entertaining you and offering you my art!" I enjoyed it perfectly and decided I needed to learn how to do that! OK....keep you posted.

Many years before I was in the rug business, I worked at a night club in Hollywood as a waitress. It was a Greek nigh club with a full 6 piece band and one of the best belly dancers in the world. Her name was Helena Velahaos. She was on the Johnny Carson show and a complete talent. She had superlative costumes, incredible moves and was professional by every definition. One of the many skills she was able to perform in her show was folding a dollar bill whilst lying on her back with the muscles of her tummy. People used to gasp on that trick but the point being, I might recognize a good belly dancer if I saw one!

When I first opened my rug gallery in Sebastopol, I hired a belly dancer for my grand opening. I interviewed more than one and this lady was the best. Her stage name was Karawan and she danced to Arabic music. She was very good and made it look so easy! She formerly danced in San Francisco and Sonoma County at numerous venues.

The pictures you see above are of her at my shop: Paradise Oriental Rugs, Inc. in Sebastopol. She danced at my grand opening a few years ago and who knows, she may dance at my gallery in the future if a special occasion calls for some superlative entertainment.

The Mannequin Chronicles Come to Paradise...

As anyone may have noticed I can get enthusiastic and when the girls came to see my Oriental rug store, all had great fun! It was a buying frenzy, for sure!

Here are a few shots taken by Dannell Powell of The Mannequin Chronicles - Mannequin Art for the Masses, a very talented artist and also my friend. As you can see, these women really have an eye for the antique Oriental rug trappings and the better rugs at my shop! The Discovery of a Live Art Form!

I pretty much live for art. All forms that make life worth living are important and valuable. Superlative moments of wonderful communication with a fellow human being are, in themselves a moment of art…timeless and perfect.

I don’t want to give too much away but the basis or tool used here is photography but there is so much more than just point and shoot. How long have you been in business?
I started my business in 1997 with two rugs that I had purchased from an individual. Prior to this I had worked at a commission only sales job selling rugs for another firm for seven years.
For the first 6 months with my new small business, I ran classified ads in newspapers and sold by appointment only from my home while working at second job.

After less than a year, I made the total commitment and quit the second job. Just as an aside, I did have a business licence and collected sales tax as the goal was to eventually get a retail store going.
My finances were pretty much hand-to-mouth for the first couple of years but loved the rugs so much I was very persistent and pushed forward.
Whenever I did well, I purchased more rugs and whenever I created an ad that worked, I noticed. I also maintained a keen awareness of what individual tastes were in my area...and used that as an index for any new rugs I bought.

When did you open your first retail gallery?
I opened my first retail gallery in 1999 in Santa Rosa, California. In 2006 I moved my business to Sebastopol, CA which is about 6 miles from my former location. The town where my gallery is currently located [Sebastopol, CA] only has 7000 residents but we're 10 minutes to Santa Rosa, which has over 150,000 people and a little over an hour from San Francisco.

Who are your customers?
I used to consider my client base rug buyers within a 50 mile radius but with my site, I now feel that anyone that has online access and is interested in the types of rugs I have is a potential client.

What are the most important qualities that determine the value of an Oriental rug?
Here are the factors from my perspective that matter the most, in their order of importance.

Beautiful colors. Colors are the paramount, second only to the artistic rendition of a good drawing. The drawing is the layout of the design.
Quality of the wool and how it is produced. The very best wool costs more than inferior wool. Hand spun wool has higher labor costs than it's machine spun counterpart.
Quality of the dyes and the skill with which they are applied. Natural or vegetable dyes are more time consuming in use and costlier to procure.
Skilled weaving. Look at the back of the rug. Is it a mess or are the rows neat and orderly?
Availability. Obviously, scarcity creates value, particularly is the piece is gorgeous.
Demand. Is the type of rug in question, all the rage or last years left over?
Cost of fuel as this affects shipping prices.
Value of the American dollar in international markets.
On antique Oriental rugs: Condition, beauty, actual verifiable age, rarity and market conditions all affect the value. The venue where it is sold and skilled marketing also influence the price. The large international auction houses in NYC and London have some of the most affluent buyers in the world so if a piece is museum quality these organizations have the widest international audience.

How have you managed to stay in business when so many rug stores have closed in the last few years?
By selling what I consider to be good quality rugs and having a specific niche that is mine. I've never liked what I call, "cookie cutter rugs" which is what you will find if you go to most of the large department stores. I was always more fascinated by pieces woven in small villages with a tribal look, beautiful hand-spun wool and deep saturated colors from the vegetable dyes, many of which are one-of-a-kind.

The Oriental Rug industry is interesting as some wholesale prices have gone down in the last few years and others have gone up. I guess my willingness to buy better quality merchandise and only from reputable wholesalers and producers has paid off. I have never used the cliche, "going out of business sale" or "lowest price" with the rugs falsely labeled some astronomical amount that is more of a fantasy than a reality. I did go by one local rug retailer's shop a year ago when he had been "closing" for seven years! He had a 3 x 5 silk rug priced at $17,000. but now it was only $3500! Suffice it to say, this was not a good deal.

When the Iranian embargo was lifted in 2000, I was literally was a kid in a candy store. The rugs that became available were nothing less that woven art. These were one-of-a-kind tribal rugs coming out of Iran that had never before been available. I filled my shop with as many as I could afford. The were not inexpensive wholesale but I took a chance and when qualified buyers entered my gallery, they were usually mesmerized. I had something different and although higher priced than what I had been selling prior, they were very well received and continue to be my best selling rugs, even now.

I also maintained communication with my clients by sending out a quarterly newsletter which always included some tantalizing photos of a few special pieces.

How has the business been the last couple of years with the Real Estate market declining and the different financial factors that are currently out there?
In all simplicity. More challenging. I have had to work harder, give better service, provide the potential client with what their needs are to the best of my ability.
I realized a while back that I needed a web site and it has proved to be a smart idea. I got my site started in 2006 and have added to it and improved it consistently since it's inception.

How many of your sales have come from your web site?
Minimally 30% of my sales last year were a direct result of my web site and as a sales tool, over 60% of my clients have been to my site, read my articles, and studied the rug photos in considering a purchase. The site has been invaluable. I have satisfied clients as far away as New York City, Virginia, Rhode Island and am working with a gentleman in Houston as we speak.
Even if it's only a sale here and there, it all ads up. When a gal walked in to my shop a while back from Montana and knew every rug in my store, I was very pleased that I had created my web site and my hard work was beginning to pay off.

How people find your web site?
I have spent the greater part of the last six months studying Search Engine Optimization and that is an entirely different conversation but what I have learned is this. People are looking on the Internet for information and if you give them accurate, understandable information for free, you can earn their trust. I have numerous articles on my site all based on questions I have been asked repeatedly for the last 15 years in the Oriental rug business.

With all the GOB's (going out of business sales) out there why do you think people buy from you?What I have heard most often is, "Penny, you have the most beautiful rugs!" The other comment I have been told over and over is that they trust me. I took the complements I have heard most often and used them in my advertising. That translated to my current ad campaign, "Beautiful rugs, sold with integrity!" Another quote that has gotten me countless sales is, "I will never sell you a rug unless you absolutely love it."

Is there any information you would like to share with other retailers?
I have seen numerous small businesses close in my area (Sonoma County, Northern California) in the last 6 months and not one of them put much energy into marketing with a little push or increasing their service! If you are not lazy and listen to your clients, give fantastic service and are actually selling something of value, you can get through this. Put up a small web site, work on it when you can. Write articles, hold small events, do whatever you can to promote within the context of your budget and when things get better you will be far ahead of the crowd and positioned quite possibly for a prosperous future!

Last man (or woman!) standing gets the prize! If any more rugs stores close, I may be the only Oriental rug dealer left!

San Francisco Tribal & Textile Arts Show is ON now!

This incredible show starts tomomrrow with the "Preview Gala" on as I write!
If you have never been and you love rugs, this show is a must see.

Why? To see is to learn...the more rugs you see the better your understanding will be of new rugs, old rugs and Oriental rugs of merrit.

Old rugs have a certain mood and attention to detail that one often does not see in newer pieces. Many times they are more finely woven and you can really percieve the weaver's true intentions in the finished product...The museums are filled with such pieces and dealers from all over the globe will be there with their finds.

The SF Tribal Arts Show is on this weekend at Fort Mason Center and for those of you that live in Marin or Sonoma County, this is just across the bridge. It's only $15.00 to get in and having attended once, my opinion is that this is a very fair price!

How to learn about Oriental Rugs!

As a person that has made the enjoyment of Persian rugs and Oriental rugs a part of my life, I am often asked the question, "How can you tell if the rug is any good?"

That is a big question but the answer is very simple. Look, feel and touch as many rugs as you can. A "good" rug will attract your attention over and over and no matter how many times you look it, it will hold your interest and give you the gift of the weavers art. Pretty colors entwined in detailed or simple designs created from the heart!

I had a very sweet gal at my gallery yesterday and I noticed that most of the rugs that were catching her eye were Turkoman pieces. If you're not familiar with these, many of them have a design element that closely resembles an octagon, set in rows upon a red field. See the above photo. I decided to give her a little more instruction so we proceeded to look at all the Turkoman rugs at my shop. After about 20 minutes, she got it and now can identify a Turkoman rug!

I have observed that there are a certain number of collectors, dealers or students of the art of hand woven textiles that like and actually try to keep the subject so esoteric and incomprehensible that my guess is 99% of the weavers would not even listen to them. Statements like, "Is the wool a Z or S spin?" In simple terms that means the spin of the wool is either to the left or the right. Is this really important? I think not!

How about, "Is the rug pretty?" Do you feel a spark of intense interest or happiness when you see it? How does the wool feel? Is is soft and silky or rough and dry? Do the colors work harmoniously together? Is there something special going on with this piece that commands your attention?

Sometimes the most wonderful rug will be interesting in a subtle way and slowly talk to you. Almost like a song you hear for the first time and but don't quite get. After a few more times of hearing it, you begin to get a feel for it and enjoy it, and finally, you can't wait to hear again and each note exquisitely bring you joy.

The three rugs you see here are: a Turkoman rug, a fantastic Persian Tribal rug, sold long ago and a blue Turkish rug that appears to be getting lots attention on my site! The Persian rug was my favorite for the simple reason that the more I looked at it, the more beautiful it became! A very good rug!

Why I becam an Oriental Rug Dealer

The first time I noticed my interest in rugs was many years ago when I was working at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. As you might not know, this is a gorgeous old hotel that is frequently used in movies, one of which was Beverly Hills Cop. The lobby is quite regal with soaring ceilings, strategically placed palms and Oriental rugs! I remember when I got the job. I was a waitress at the time, serving cocktails in the lobby and all I could talk about were the rugs in the room! The beginning of the beginning!

Fast forward 15 years and I am now working at a sales job in Seattle, Washington. Selling inexpensive machine woven rugs (which is almost a crime, if you're an Oriental rug dealer, which I am now!) but anyway I had a client that was interested in a hand woven rug. I had one contact at the time, a dealer which I am still friends with today. I asked him to bring me a few pieces for my potential buyer. I remember this as if it were this morning. He opened the few rugs he brought and one of them knocked my socks off! Literally. It was a gorgeous old rug from Afghanistan. From the knowledge I now have, it was an unusual Turkoman piece.

The rug haunted me and stayed in my mind for almost six months! I never did sell that couple a rug but ended up, buying this rug for myself. I would go to my friends store and stay for the longest time, just looking at the rugs. It was very difficult for me to leave...dreamed of working there and even asked him for a job but it was naught.

I had the worlds smallest rug collection after a couple years and decided I would ultimately get my own store and expand my rug collection. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether I enjoy selling rugs more or buying them. If you sell a person the right rug, they are so happy, it is actually great fun. I know I'm doing OK when I go to the post office and a past client sees me and exclaims, "I love my rug!" Not, hello, how are you? Which is fine with me! I've never been one for social banter anyway...just get to the point.

This is not the easiest business to be in and for the first 3 or 4 years, I was never able to keep anything I purchased for my business. I had to leave all the special pieces in my inventory for sale. Then I decided I had worked hard enough and there was a particular rug that was generating so much interest but no buyers. I let my assistant know that if the rug was still there by the end of the week it was mine. Well, it is mine and still one of my favorites!
